What is a VR Headset?

A VR headset is a computer wore on your head that allows a user to experience immersive experiences through 360 and 3D degree visuals, audio and 3-6 degrees freedom of interaction.

There are VR headsets that are mobile and ones that are attached to a PC. The main difference is that ones that are attached to a PC will be able to channel higher power to run high performance VR experiences such as multiplayer, high fidelity games.

For education marketing, VR headsets are used for open days, education fairs and events, therefore it needs to be mobile and easily transported by the marketing and admissions team.

At Deseo VR, we are going to focused on two brands, Meta and Pico.

Meta Quest 2 vs Pico 4 VR

Meta Quest 2 is a VR headset launched in 2020 by Mark Zuckerberg 's Meta.
Pico 4 is one of Meta's direct competitor, launched in 2022 by ByteDance.

Price

Meta Quest 2: 349.99€‎

Pico 4: 368.95€‎

Resolution

The visual is the most important aspect of the immersive experience, therefore all VR headsets brands have been constantly improving its resolution since the first Oculus SDK in 2015.

Meta Quest 2: 3664x1920

Pico 4: 4320x2160

Audio

Spatial audio can enhance the VR experience dramatically because it allows you to hear from different directions depending on where the sound is coming from.

Meta Quest 2: 3D spatial audio and 3.5mm audio port for headphones

Pico 4: 3D spatial audio and Bluetooth for headphones

Comfort

Comfort is a huge factor that influences the VR experience of the parent or student. The more comfortable it is, the more they will concentrate and be immersed in the school's story. Also, for the admission staff, they will be able to provide a smoother service when putting it on the user's head.

Meta Quest default headstrap is not so comfortable. This is especially the case when the person has a head bun. Also, as the front of the headset is heavier than the back, it may cause strain on the head. It is possible to upgrade the headstrap for 69.99€‎

Pico 4 default headstrap is more comfortable. Not only is it lighter, the weight is better distributed between the front and back. In addition, the headstrap desgin allows the user to easily put on the headset.

Account set-up

Both Pico 4 and Meta Quest allows 1 account on multiple devices. However Pico 4 has a limit of 3 VR headsets per account.

Remote device management

Both brands require the enterprise version or a 3rd party software such as ShowtimeVR to control multiple devices at the same time.

Also, the kiosk mode where the user can only enter 1 app is only possible on the enterprise version of the headsets.

However, Pico 4 does have a loop mode on its video player which acts similar to the kiosk mode.

Conclusion

For schools or universities looking to use VR headsets for marketing in events with small number of visitors, you should buy the Pico 4. It wins in comfort and price.

If you are looking for bigger events, it might be worth buying Meta Quest 2 with its upgraded head-strap and then using a remote controller to easily play the VR experience for multiple devices.
